Meet the member of staff: Lee Williamson, Membership Development Manager
Hi, I’m Lee Williamson, a member of Kingston RT 19 and soon-to-be Clapham 20, and formerly Maryport 292.
I’ve been a Tabler for ten years, joining Maryport Round Table in 2016. I’d previously made all the same excuses people tend to make about not getting out of the house: work, lack of time, etc. But once I went along, I was hooked.
In my first year, I really got into international travel and ended up going to Israel, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Germany and the Netherlands for the 92 Numbers meeting. This culminated in me winning the Danish Axe for being RTBI International Tabler of the Year, recognising how much I embraced international travel in my first year.
When I was in Cumbria, I was also the founding Chairman of Keswick RT and helped establish Wigton RT.
I later met someone and moved to London, transferring to Kingston RT as their third member. Within two years, Kingston grew from two to 14 members, but I have now decided to break away and start a new Table closer to where I live.
The move to London also gave me the opportunity to look for a new job. I was formerly a police officer, but I now work full-time for Round Table. I live in South London with my girlfriend and young son.
The Job
I’ve worked for RT for two and a half years. My role is essentially to grow and support Tables that are struggling.
I meet with the Table, and together we strip things back to basics. I ensure they have a programme planned, are meeting regularly, and have active social media channels that help promote the Table. I also help with the administration behind the scenes to support them and fast-track the process.
This allows the Table to focus on being the boots on the ground, making Round Table fun again rather than a burden. After a few months, they will hopefully have recruited a few new members, bringing fresh energy and rejuvenation.
Table isn't hard, but it does take a little time and effort to make the magic happen. It’s often just a case of meeting up every other week and making some noise about it.
If anyone is struggling with Round Table and is at the end of their tether, whether they have only three or four members, haven’t recruited for a while, need some fresh blood, aren’t meeting regularly, or have simply become a bit stagnant, then I’m your guy.
