Market Rasen Preparing To Take On Channel Challenge

During the first week in June, 10 members of the Market Rasen Round Table will be taking on a challenge like none they have ever faced before, as they bid to row across the English Channel.

The challenge will be a gruelling test of the physical and mental strength of the Table members.

Tim Rinaldi, a member of the Market Rasen Table, told us how the idea came together: “We came up with the idea after seeing an advert in a magazine about rowing the channel. Originally it seemed a terrible idea, but the more we thought about the more we wanted to have a go at it”.

The Table members are raising money for a local charity, the Ethan Maull Foundation, a cause with the aim of building a house near the Lincoln Hospital to provide that home from home feeling for patients receiving treatment for serious illnesses.

Recently, French Authorities closed the main Dover to Calais route used by many for charity. However, this has not stopped the guys from Market Rasen! They are now starting in Nieuwpoort in Belgium and rowing their way across an extended 55 miles of open sea (more than twice the distance of the Dover-Calais route), finishing in Ramsgate.

Incredibly only 5 crews have completed this challenge previously, making it even more impressive that a group of men with minimal rowing experience are taking on the task.

The Table have started a vigorous training regime lasting four months, that will help prepare their bodies for the challenging task. The intense routines include long sessions in the gym, lengthy runs, swimming and days spent on the water down at Langstone Adventure Rowing in Portsmouth.

Tim also spoke about the preparation for the challenge: “The training has been intense, but there is no problem keeping ourselves motivated, we have tried to turn it into a friendly competition sharing the training times with each other and turning it into a contest.”

“It is amazing how much this has brought everyone at the Table together, it’s a real team effort that everyone has thrown themselves into”.
