Nav Ali, Marlow
When Nav Ali, a supply chain consultant and former President of Marlow Round Table, represented his club at the Queen's Golden Jubilee visit to Marlow, he never dreamed he would end up discussing his shaving habits with Prince Philip. But Nav, now an honorary member, remembers it vividly as one of the highlights of his time as a Tabler.
Nav Ali was surrounded by local dignitaries when Prince Philip made a beeline for him, and, pointing at his beard, said: "How long did it take you to grow that?"
"I had thinned my beard out that morning and had quite a close shave", said Nav. "So when he said that, I thought on my feet and said back: 'It has been growing this morning while I was waiting for you, Sir', and he said: 'You really ought to throw some fertiliser over it'.
"Right next to us were some photographers, who started snapping away when they heard that!"
Nav was originally introduced to Round Table as his partner at the time was a member of Ladies Circle. He said he joined the Marlow Club, where he later became President, for fellowship, to widen his social network and to get involved with the local community - and though meeting Royals wasn't high on his list, it is certainly one of the Table experiences he will remember most vividly!
