Hastings Round Table Take On Whisky Barrel Challenge

Running a half marathon can be a difficult challenge at the best of times, but the guys from Hastings Round Table decided that wasn’t enough and dragged ‘Rhonda’, a 65kg whisky barrel, into the mix.

On Sunday 19th March a team of 7 Table members will push, pull and fight their way round the UK’s most difficult half marathon (a race often used by many as a prep for the London Marathon!), the Hasting's Half Marathon.

Rhonda first appeared back in 2008 when one of the Hasting’s Round Table members, Phil Astell, decided the Table needed an alternative to their annual Santa Sleigh, so sought the biggest barrel he could find. The Table then attached wheels to the the barrel now fondly known as Rhonda and a funnel for coin collections along the route.

The guys have become a bit of a local phenomenon receiving plenty of cheers and attention from the community as they work their way round the gruelling course every year.

In the 2016 race they even managed to set a personal best with a very respectable time of 2 hours 32 minutes.

Tony Barber, the current president of the Table, spoke about their efforts: “It’s amazing! The funny part is we actually beat some proper runners despite pushing several hundred-pound worth of weight on a set of casters”.

Their efforts raise around £3,000 each year, with all those funds being reinvested into helping several great causes and charities. This year the Table have decided to support Cystic Fibrosis, a cause close to the member’s hearts.

President Tony Barber added “The sense of satisfaction on the day and when we hand out the money makes the endless chaffing and days of leg pain worth every second. The beers afterwards seem to help the cause too.”

Hastings Round Table hold several community events throughout the year, including their very popular Beer & Music festival that has seen the likes of Status Quo and Keane headline in the past. Check out their website for more information.
