Leicester De Montfort Round Table Complete Barcelona Rally!
Find out how 4 Round Table Members completed a marathon journey to Barcelona
In May Jon Carlisle, Richard Adkinson, Ollie Walmsley and Charlie Weller from Leicester De Montfort Round Table drove 920 miles taking part in the Barcelona Bangers Rally. Here is Charlie’s diary from their epic journey in a rather fetching Maroon Toyota Carina!
Day 1 - Leicester - Calais
Dover: Our first taste of other Bangers Rally cars - this one was a treat, a converted hearse dressed as Ghostbusters complete with kit on top and speakers playing the siren and theme tune! After a quick ferry journey we exited to the bemusement of the port workers as a whole load of old bangers rolled off with the sound of Ghostbusters blaring behind us.
Day 2 - Calais – Lyon
An early start and 450 miles to cover - we soon realised we didn’t have much time to get the challenges done so we hit the autoroute - The miles slowly ticked by as we cruised but with no air con it was hot! Arriving into Lyon with only 6k to the hotel we hit rush hour traffic – so around the block a few times, arriving at the hotel a massive 10 1/2 hours after we set off from Calais.......450 miles...you must be joking! Needless to say we didn’t win the challenge!
Day 3 - Lyon – Nice
After a better night’s sleep, as Ollie and I cunningly made the two snoring members of the team share a room - we set off to Nice. Weather - stunning - Today’s challenge photos of churches with team members outside. I can’t really say a lot about driving through the Pyrenees as it’s a thing you've got to see - needless to say it was spectacular and remains on the highlight list of the trip for all of us.
Day 4 - Nice - Barcelona
The coastal route would take 12 1/2 hours, 350 miles was quoted!? Arriving we were greeted with the gorgeous hostel we had chosen. Leicester to Barcelona in 4 days! The room was a little cramped for the 4 of us – but at £20 a night including breakfast and parking in the centre of Barcelona who's complaining!? A short rest and we headed for the finish line party!
Would they recommend other people doing something like this? Charlie said; "without a doubt. We spent in total 10 days, 24-7 with each other in a confined space but it has been worth it as we estimate to have raised £3,500.00 in aid of Mind, Parkinsons, Barnardos and Combat Stress. It just shows you that Round Table is all about meeting like minded people and doing something you wouldn't normally do!"
