Round Table And The RNLI Volunteer Crew

Published: Saturday 8th May 2010

Round Table and RNLI - Train One Save ManyRound Table are proud to announce that their focus for the year 2010-11 is the training of RNLI volunteer crew.

Round Table wanted to support an organisation that:

  • Had no Government funding
  • Was National and covered Great Britain and Ireland
  • Relates to our members
  • Affects each and every one of us, whether it is at sea, in shore or at the beach.

Back in 1977 Round Table raised approximately £140,000 to fund the Waveney Class lifeboat ON1045 and named her Louis Marchesi of Round Table.

During her time with the RNLI she saved 264 lives while serving at Newhaven, Alderney, Exmouth, Ramsgate and Courtmacsherry. The RNLI defines a life saved as exactly that: if a lifeboat and her crew had not been present, those lives would have been lost.

The volunteers that form the crews of the RNLI risk their lives on a daily basis and each crew member saves on average 21 lives. The average crew member’s age is similar to that of a Round Tabler and they too, have to retire at an age of between 45 and 55 depending on the type of life boat they serve on.

The RNLI offers a first-class lifesaving service and training is vital in helping crews to save lives – last year alone, its volunteers crews rescued 8,186 people.

The cost to train one crew member is on average £1,200, a great investment if that relates to 21 lives saved. This is a cause that Round Table is proud to be involved with, it is tangible and you can see where your donation is going and what it is doing.

Round Table aims to raise enough money to train at least 100 crew members and to support two training courses, or provide the RNLI with the ability to save 2100 more lives if required..

Round Table has already started its efforts by taking part in a Morecambe Bay Walk and plan to coordinate major Round Table fundraising events in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales over the course of the year.

Round Table is proud to be involved with RNLI and specifically “Train One Save Many”
